Sandrine Kiefer #2

Sandrine Kiefer, Berlin-Istanbul, collage installation

„I am French, but my deep connection to Istanbul runs far beyond tourism. I’ve visited the city nearly 30 times and have learned Turkish along the way. Locals often joke that I must have lived a past life as a Turk, and in many ways, I feel that too 😉
Berlin is a city that offers a unique cultural echo of Istanbul. Berlin is considered the largest Turkish city outside of Turkey. Isn’t Berlin, especially the Kreuzberg district, often nicknamed „Little Istanbul“? As I approached this residency, my first creative impulse was then to bring these two cities into dialogue and creative resonance.“

Sandrine Kiefer

born in Paris, living in Marseille, and Istanbul-addicted

Through her practice of collage, Sandrine Kiefer explores is looking for unexpected encounters between image and text. Her artistic approach is to enrich and animate each collage with words: it can be a phrase, or even a longer paragraph, unearthed mostly from a novel. It’s as if the image and the text were always destined for one another, finally brought together as an inevitable pairing, one no longer existing without the other.
In a creative frenzy, she is able to produce over 150 collages in just two months, diving headfirst into a whirlwind of themes: love, life, death, sustainability, identity, sexuality, homosexuality, identity, womanhood, freedom…
